I just got a new computer with Win XP home and want to network them
briefly so I can copy files over. But I can't seem to get it set up
properly.
I connected the XP and Win95 computers with Ethernet cables to ports 1
and 2 of a Netgear wireless router MR841v2, and connected a DSL modem to
the Internet port.
On the new computer I ran Network Setup Wizard and specified name Dell
and workgroup Workgroup. I was told to run the wizard on each computer
of the network, but I can't run it (from the Win XP disk) on Win95.
On the old one I went into Control Panel > Network and set
Primary Network Logon = Client for Microsoft Networks
Properties: Logon and Restore Network Connections
File sharing on
Share-level access control
TCP/IP adapter for my LAN card installed
Checked 'Obtain IP address automatically'
Name Quantex, workgroup Workgroup.
The one networky thing that happens is that I can get to the Internet
from both computers at the same time.
Now if I go to Network Neighborhood I see Quantex and Entire Network.
But Entire Network goes nowhere, and when I right click it to check
Properties I get the message 'The properties for this item are not
available'.
I can ping the Quantex (192.168.0.3) from the Dell (192.168.0.1) and
vice versa, but I can't do it by the name Quantex/Dell.
I've been trying to Google a solution, but haven't found anything that
works. Some things (like changing properties in Entire Network) I can't
even do.
