Is there a way to bring up a terminal window and/or issue modem
commands AFTER a PPP/dialup session has been established under
win95? By this I mean after the terminal window has been closed
and a dialup session started?

I tried Hyperterminal but am only able to get an initial login,
with no data transfer. Program appears to only allow file
transfers via Z-Modem, etc. I get login, but no AT commands can be
issued after that, nor do I see any data transfer in terminal
screen. Is there a command that needs to be issued to initiate
data transfer between client and ISP modems? Any helpful info.
appreciated.

If there is an active PPP session, the resource (port/modem) is in use
by the PPP program, and can't be accessed by another. Are you trying to
perform an FTP transfer over your PPP connection?

Thanks for the explaination. I have been having problems with
remote modem hangups not related to inactivity or time online.
Smells like deliberate hangups by ISP and log reports "remote
modem hung up". Also having wide variation in CRC
errors/incomplete packets-sometimes little or none, other times
alot. Also modem freezes with not data able to transfer and cannot
hang up without reboot. Maybe bad modem? Only happens
occasionally, but is a pain. I was hoping for something like
Trumpet, only which will work with all my apps and not cause
windoze problems. I have studied the PPP logs, nothing seems
unusual. Also would like to issue AT report commands on the fly.
Or am I totally going about this the wrong way. And yes I am going
to get a new system/os but not soon.

What kind of modem are you using?
It sounds like your line is experiencing noise above that tolerated by
your modem, or you have call waiting or another service that clicks or
beeps your line while you are using it. Or, it could just be your modem
is quitting on you. For noisy lines, nothing beats a quality external
modem, if you can find one.

Well I considered line noise and wondered if one of these little
clip on filtering devices would help. But I get good connections
most of the time; this problem is intermittent. I think maybe the
modem is just funky; on it's way out maybe. Ur right external
modem would bring a big improvement most likely, however there is
no solution if my ISP is just playing hangup games. Modem log as I
said simply states "remote modem hung up"; there is no relation
between crc errors and hangups, so I think maybe it is not line
noise. Guess what? I was having a voice conversation the other day
and in the middle of our conversation I get modem noise (my
computer was off). Someone is screwing with my phone connection.
